Buryatia

Buryate Story Team in Ulan Ude

In the large, diverse land of Russia, Buryatia is located in the south-central region of Siberia along the eastern shore of Lake Baikal.  Scores of unreached people groups populate Russia, the largest of which are the Buryates, whose religion is Buddhism.

When a young pastor’s wife saw The Story in Irkutsk, she realized its potential to reach her own people, the Buryates.  She initiated contact with the TMCJ staff and made inquiry as to the possibility of developing a version to reach her countrymen with the precious Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Thus the Buryate version of The Story was created.  The team comprised of many from Buddhist backgrounds.  A former shaman portrayed the strategic role of Jesus.  The drama was translated into both the Russian and Buryate language, so that all within this unique people group could hear and understand the life-changing message.  Many of the Buryate social customs were implemented into the drama, thereby giving further cultural identification and enhancing the message that Jesus came to bring hope and eternal life to them!

In the summer of 2003, TMCJ had the privilege of launching the first Buryate team in the city of Ulan-Ude, the center of Buryatia.  Because the powerful drama known as The Story can be easily transported from village to village, many Buryates have seen, heard and responded to the greatest story ever told!
